How to use this calculator
A middle is two bets on opposite sides of the same market at different lines, set up so there is a band of results where both bets win. Enter the stake and odds for each side, and optionally the two lines to see the winning window. The calculator shows your profit if you hit the middle (both win), the result if only one side wins, and the break-even hit rate - how often the middle has to land to make the play worthwhile. When the two lines are entered, it lists the exact results that win both bets.
The idea behind a middle
- Middle - betting, for example, Over 44.5 at one book and Under 47.5 at another. A total of 45, 46 or 47 wins both.
- The window - the results that land between your two lines. The wider the gap, the more often the middle hits.
- The cost - when the middle misses, one bet wins and one loses, usually leaving a small loss equal to the vig.
- Break-even hit rate - because the payoff is large and the cost is small, a middle often only needs to land a few percent of the time to be profitable.
How it is calculated
It is straightforward arithmetic on the two bets, so the tool never needs updating.
- If the middle hits
both = stake₁(odds₁−1) + stake₂(odds₂−1) - If only one side wins
net = winner's profit − loser's stake - Break-even hit rate
rate = miss cost ÷ (hit profit + miss cost)
The break-even figure here averages the two miss outcomes; real frequency depends on how often results land inside your window.
Middles are a real edge but a patient one. You will miss far more often than you hit, grinding small losses while you wait for the window to land - so they only pay off across many attempts and with enough bankroll to ride the misses. They also need two books offering different lines at the same time, the gap can close before you place the second leg, and whole-number results can push rather than win both. Treat the break-even rate as a guide, not a promise.
