How to use the break-even win rate calculator

Pick your odds format (Decimal, Fractional or American) and type in the odds. The break-even win rate is the share of bets at those odds you need to win just to come out level. If you want to check yourself, type your own estimated win rate into the optional box: the calculator shows your edge in percentage points and your expected return on each bet, green when you are ahead and red when you are behind. Decimal is the format Canadian sportsbooks show by default.

The terms in short

  • Break-even win rate: the win percentage at which you neither gain nor lose over time.
  • Your win rate: how often you expect bets like this to win, as a percentage.
  • Edge: your win rate minus the break-even rate. Positive means a long-term advantage.
  • Expected ROI per bet: the average profit or loss per unit staked if your win rate holds up.

How it is calculated

The break-even rate is just the implied probability of the odds, and your edge follows from there:

  • Break-even win rate100 ÷ decimal odds
  • Edge (pp)your rate − break-even rate
  • Expected ROI / bet(your rate ÷ 100 × decimal) − 1
  • Fractional → Decimal(top ÷ bottom) + 1
  • American → Decimal+: odds ÷ 100 + 1 · −: 100 ÷ |odds| + 1

Why beating break-even is the whole game

The break-even rate already bakes in the bookmaker margin, so the odds you are offered always demand a higher win rate than the true chance of the outcome. That gap is the house edge working against you on every bet. Clearing break-even consistently is hard, and over a long run most bettors land below it, which is exactly why staying inside a set budget matters more than chasing a winning system.
